"Wahkiakum is a place where every adult knows every kid – or pretty close to that. And every adult is held accountable for upholding clear boundaries that protect youth even when it may feel easier to look the other way. The Community Network takes responsibility for addressing community norms favorable to substance abuse and increases adult mobilization by asking, each other, or through the local newspaper and Town Hall meetings, “is our community really doing what we believe is good enough for our children?” By promoting individualized caring a collective will has been cultivated. This shared identity has created a county-wide commitment to caring and a no tolerance resolve.
The Healthy Youth Survey shows great success in reaching youth with this kind of perseverance. Thirty day use substance abuse has been reduced significantly by Wahkiakum youth. Three out of four grades reduced rates of 30 day use in alcohol, tobacco and marijuana. The average age of initiation has been improved from age 10 to age 12, showing that the community is making an impact in the choices youth are making. For caring enough to Say No – and sticking to it – it is an honor to present this award to the Wahkiakum County Community Network. " Laura Porter, Family Policy Council. |
